Operatives of the Department of State Security Services (DSS) have released Journalist and author, Dr Chido Onumah.
Onumah was arrested yesterday evening at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja after returning from Spain.
No reason was given for the arrest of the author and it immediately drawn widespread criticism from Nigerians and groups who called for his immediate release.
The National Coordinator of the Human Rights Writers Association, Emmanuel Onwubiko said, “It is obvious to us now that this country is sliding into a state of tyranny.
“We are witnessing a shrinking of the democratic space; a situation where citizens can longer feel safe from harassment by agents of the state in their own country is not healthy for democracy.
“Sadly, the United Nations system is very slow in dealing with such issues. What we require now is for the international community to step up their interventions and pay greater attention to what is happening in Nigeria.”
The African Centre for Media and Information Literacy, the group which Onumah coordinates, has confirmed the release of the activist.
